FAIR DEBT COLLECTION

The following information is excerpted from a brochure titled "FTC Facts For Consumers, Fair Debt Collection" which can be found on the Federal Trade Commission website at www.ftc.gov:

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires that debt collectors treat debtors  fairly and prohibits certain methods of debt collection. 

Common questions about debt collection include:  What debts are covered?  Who is a debt collector? How may a debt collector contact someone? Can a person stop a debt collector from contacting them? May a debt collector contact others about an individual's debt? What must the debt collector tell you about the debt? May a debt collector continue to contact you if you believe you do not owe the money in question? What types of debt collection practices are prohibited? What control does the debtor have over the payment of debts? What can someone do if they believe a debt collector violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act?
